Sony Dynamic Digital Sound is the only system out of the three big ones that can utilize 7.1 discrete channels of sound with five front channels. SDDS can also use 5.1 channels, like most others. Because of passing analog sound processors that all screens come equipped with, SDDS mixes frequency response (5-20,000 Hz) and a 105 decibel dynamic range. Maybe this is why SDDS uses the word "Dynamic". One unit, which is very expensive at about $11,000 for the basic set, carries signals to their assigned speakers. Redundancy on digital data is superior so that the digital signal will not halt. The basic six-channel system is LF, C, RF, RS, LS, SW. The eight-channel system adds LC and RC sound.

There are no plans for Sony to make a home theatre product out of the SDDS system.
